How the estimate is built
Carrier invoices are built in layers. This calculator follows the same order:
Transportation = max(Base charge + Rate per weight unit × Billable weight, Minimum charge)
Fuel surcharge = Fuel % × (Transportation [+ delivery surcharges])
Total = Transportation + Delivery surcharges + Fuel surcharge + Handling fee
The transportation charge is the core price for moving the parcel. Real rate cards set it by service, zone and weight; here you describe it as a base charge plus a price per pound or kilogram, which matches most per-weight freight and courier quotes. If your rate card is a table, enter the price for your weight as the base charge and leave the per-unit rate at zero.
Delivery surcharges (residential, remote or extended area, additional handling) are flat amounts added per parcel. The fuel surcharge is a percentage that carriers adjust frequently. Your own handling fee - packing labour, materials or markup - is added last and is not subject to fuel.
Worked example
These numbers are illustrative only, not any carrier’s rates. A 4.2 lb parcel measuring 16 × 12 × 8 in is going to a residential address with a dimensional divisor of 139 and billable weight rounded up to the next pound.
| Dimensional weight | 16 × 12 × 8 = 1,536 in³ ÷ 139 = 11.05 lb → 12 lb |
| Actual weight | 4.2 lb → 5 lb |
| Billable weight | 12 lb (dimensional) |
| Transportation | $8.50 base + 12 × $0.65 = $16.30 |
| Residential surcharge | $5.50 |
| Fuel surcharge | 15% × ($16.30 + $5.50) = $3.27 |
| Handling fee | $1.50 |
| Estimated total | $26.57 |
Notice that the box size, not the product, sets the price: at its actual weight of 5 lb the transportation charge would be $11.75. PressLoad example above to see this breakdown in the calculator.
How to use the result
- Set shipping prices and free-shipping thresholds. Compare the estimate with what you charge at checkout. Any gap comes out of your margin - see the Shopify profit margin calculator.
- Compare services. Save a rate card per service or carrier, then load each one with the same parcel to compare.
- Spot surcharge-driven costs. If surcharges and fuel are a large share of the total, delivery address mix and box size may matter more than the base rate you negotiate.
Saving rate cards
The Saved rate cards panel stores the route labels, currency, rates, surcharges and divisor settings under a name of your choice. Package weight and dimensions are not saved, so you can reuse a card for any parcel. Rate cards are kept in your browser’s local storage on this device only and are never sent to a server.
Common mistakes and limitations
- Using an old fuel percentage. Fuel surcharges change often; an out-of-date figure can move the total noticeably.
- Forgetting dimensional weight. Light, bulky parcels are rarely billed at their scale weight.
- Treating zones as one price. Real rates depend on distance or zone. Keep a separate rate card per zone or destination region.
- Missing surcharges. Peak-season, additional handling, oversize, signature, Saturday delivery and address correction charges are not included unless you add them under other surcharges.
- Expecting duties and taxes. International shipments may also attract customs duty, import tax and brokerage, which are covered by the landed cost calculator.
Methodology
Billable weight uses the same conversion factors and rules as the dimensional weight calculator, converted into the weight unit your rate is quoted in. Money is calculated in whole cents: each line item is rounded once, half away from zero, and the total is the exact sum of the lines shown. No carrier prices, fuel percentages or surcharge amounts are built in. Origin, destination and service fields are labels for your records and do not change the maths.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a live carrier quote?
No. The calculator does not connect to any carrier. It applies the rates you type in, so the result is only as accurate as those rates. For a binding price, use your carrier’s own quoting tool, shipping software or account rates.
Where do I find the rates to enter?
Use your negotiated contract, the carrier’s published rate guide for your zone and service, a quote from a freight forwarder, or the rates shown in your shipping platform. Fuel surcharge percentages are published separately by most carriers and change regularly.
How is the fuel surcharge calculated?
Carriers express it as a percentage of the transportation charge, and many also apply it to delivery surcharges such as residential or remote-area fees. The checkbox lets you choose whether it applies to those surcharges. It is not applied to your own handling fee.
My rate card is a table by weight, not a price per pound. How do I enter it?
Look up the price for the billable weight and zone in your table, enter it as the base charge and set the cost per weight unit to zero. Run the dimensional weight calculator first if you need the billable weight.
Can I estimate international shipping?
Yes, as long as you enter the international rate and surcharges you were quoted. Duties, import taxes and brokerage fees are separate from the shipping charge - use the landed cost calculator to add them.
Where are my saved rate cards stored?
In your browser’s local storage on this device only. They are never uploaded. Clearing your browser data, using a private window or switching devices will remove them.
